Saturday before jetting off to Continent

We have continued on the history and scenic road for the last few days, Melton Mowbray which is famous for Pork Pies which we tried and bought 1 for lunch. Not too bad but wouldn't eat regularly. Belton House and gardens built in 1685 and the previous owner was a Lord Belton who assisted Mrs Simpson fleeing to France which led to the abdication of King George V - for his friendship with the King and Mrs Simpson he was exciled from Society until Prince Charles stayed there in the 70's. Also went to see Kirby Hall which are a ruins built in 1570 and abandoned by its owner due to gambling debts in the 18th century. Flag Fen near Peterborough which is Bronze Age Centre and archaeologists are still working on site was very interesting and they had recreated the round house of bronze and iron age people from the information learnt to date.

Glynis, thought you might like to know we were heading to Nottingham but the Guard on our resort Gate asked why??? and suggested going to Lincoln instead. So headed off to Lincoln which was really nice place full of history including a lot of Roman remains which John is enthralled with. Personally I am getting a bit historied out.... will be glad to see some shops and stuff in Paris. However, we did call in at a Workhouse which was built in the 1830's and although that was depressing to see the conditions of the people who had to go into that sort of place it was an amazing education. On the way back from there we stopped off at Sir Isaac Newton's birth place and checked out the Science Museum that was next to it with lots of hands on stuff to play with. Excellent presentation, even saw the Apple Tree that he watched the apple fall from.

Today is raining and struggling to get to the 20 that they are forecasting so we are hoping it will clear up as we want to go on a cruise on Rutland Water and a bike ride around the lake.
